Lewis and Clark - Looking for the River Route

 

Use your Map and follow Lewis and Clark’s trail.

Match the numbers below to the map. Use a BLUE pencil to trace the Corps of Discovery’s route.

 

 

1.      Lewis left Pittsburgh August 31,1803 traveling SW down the Ohio River to Clarksville and Louisville. Label with a P

 

2.   Clark joined Lewis in Clarksville/Louisville (Label with a C-L) and they sailed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to Camp River Dubois. [Doo - BWA]

 

3. At Camp River Dubois, they made their first Winter Camp and stayed from December 1803 to May 1804. Label with a D

 

4.     Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri River to the Mandan Villages. Label with a M. The trip took from May to November 1804.

 

At Fort Mandan they made their second Winter Camp from November 1804 to April 1805. The temperature fell to 45 degrees below 0!

 

Lewis and Clark asked a French-Canadian trader named Toussaint Charbonneau [Shar-ben-oh], who brought his Shoshone wife Sacajawea [Sack-a-ja-WEE-a] to act as their interpreter.

 

5.      On May 26th, Lewis saw the Rockies for the first time. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Label the Rocky Mountains

 

They had to portage the canoes for 17 miles around the Great Falls. Label with a GF

 

6.      In August, they crossed the Continental Divide and met the first band of Shoshone Indians led by Sacajawea’s brother Label with a CD

 

7.      A Shoshoneguide named Old Toby led them over the rugged Bitterroot Mountains. For 3 weeks in the snowy peaks, they almost starved to death.

 

They met up with the Nez Percé Indians who saved them. ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ Label the Bitterroot Mountains

 

8.      The explorers spotted the Pacific Ocean on November 7th, 1805. They spent a month exploring based out or Fort Clatsop and in March 1806 started the long journey back. Label with a C
